European City Tourism Monitor V: Are European Cities on the Road to Reovery? According to the results of the 5th European City Tourism Monitor, 89 city tourism professionals from 68 destinations expect bednights to grow in the 2nd quarter of 2010, compared with the same period in 2009. Domestic markets and the leisure segment seem to account for much of this optimism. In terms of international source markets, experts are most confident about growth in the Italian and German markets and little confidence is expressed for growth from Great Britain.

According to the results of the 5th European City Tourism Monitor, 89 city tourism professionals from 68 destinations expect bednights to grow in the 2nd quarter of 2010, compared with the same period in 2009. Domestic markets and the leisure segment seem to account for much of this optimism. In terms of international source markets, experts are most confident about growth in the Italian and German markets and little confidence is expressed for growth from Great Britain.

It should also be noted that, with the exception of respondents from the South of Europe, there is little expectation of a fall in hotel prices.

When asked about the key factors influencing tourism in their

\n

destinationsin the 2nd quarter of 2010, respondents emphasised the state of the economy, and specifically whether it is improving (12.4%) or not (11.2%). Events, culture and new attractions were regarded as push factors by 13.5% of those polled. Changes in exchange rates – acting in both directions – were also pointed out as a key element to consider (9%). Better accessibility by air, marketing campaigns currently running and the focus on value for money were all seen as positive factors (8% each).

The 6th edition of this survey, carried out by ECM Research & Statistics Working Group, will take place in June 2010, referring to expectations for the 3rd quarter. Every participant in the survey will get a full report with the results.
