A few far-seeing European Convention Bureaux got together to form the European Federation of Conference Towns (EFCT) in Brussels. Its main ambition was to be the focal point for the Europe’s emerging Meetings Industry, the independent source of information for clients to search for destinations in Europe.
Over the years, EFCT has become the voice of experience in the European Meetings and Events Industry and a network that is playing a significant role in the International Meetings World.
A handful of CEOs of French Tourist Boards regularly worked with their German counterparts and naturally wished to enrich their discussions with more European destinations. ECT and EFCT were both working in the Tourism and Meetings Industry landscape and significantly expanded over the years. More than 50% of ECT and EFCT members belonged to both Associations and discussions logically came up to find synergies.
Both associations merged forming European Cities Marketing, including one forum for Leisure and one for Meetings Industry related activities.
More and more cities adopt a more holistic approach in the way they work, seeking for a better balance between visitors and inhabitants. A third forum on City Marketing was recently added to the portfolio in order to meet those needs. In addition to the President, there are now three Vice-Presidents who represent the three main subject areas that modern destination management and destination marketing organizations deal with. The name European Cities Marketing then revealed its full potential and the brand was refreshed in 2013.

Gillian is an ECM Board member, and for the last two years has been chairing the Meetings Committee. This committee determines the scope and content of the Spring, Summer and Autumn meetings and monitors member feedback formally and informally. In essence, it seeks to maintain the quality and relevance of the three annual meetings which are the basis of ECM networking activity.
At the General Assembly of European Cities Marketing held in Lyon, France, on 10th June 2011, Heike Mahmoud (Berlin) was elected as the Association’s new Vice President and the head of the Convention Forum.

Denis Zanon worked over a 24 year period for tourist organisations situated in the French Alps, working in places such as Chamonix, Annecy, and Courchevel. A specialist in business tourism, he moved south to the Côte d’Azur to become the new General Manager of Nice Tourisme et Congrès in July 2008. Treasurer of ECM since October 2010, Denis Zanon now reveals something of himself.
Serene, professional and always smiling. This is Jean-Michel Lafond as we all know him. Yet behind this smiling professional serenity is a precise, hard-working man, fighting for an idea. This idea is one of city tourism, of Europe, co-operating cities, a multicultural network and friendship.
Since 1st January 2000, Stefan Diender is the CEO / Managing Director Amsterdam Tourist Board BV, holding company for BV Amsterdam Marketing & Data Center, Leisure Consultancy, Reservation Center, Tourist Office and Congress Bureau. An ECM Board member for the past two years, during the General Assembly in Gothenburg in June 2009, Stefan was elected the ECM Vice President for the Tourism Forum.

The picture is clear in everyone’s mind: European cities are now packed with tourists, the streets full of people holding a map in one hand and a camera in the other, queues at the entrance of the main attractions, hotel rooms fully booked and the traffic congested. But as soon as the Christmas Season is over, the number of visitors can rapidly diminish making these same places look like ghost towns – until the next wave.
European City Tourism Monitor is an ECM-based survey project undertaken by the Research & Statistics Knowledge Group. Established three years ago, this forecasting tool delivers valuable data and over the years member city participation in the quarterly survey has steadily risen. In this piece, André Moura, a leading member of the Group, explains the background to the project and how the data are processed and used in ways which are relevant for operations and policy.
Since 1991, Anne Wallin-Rødven has managed the Convention Bureau of VisitOslo. She is committed to ECM and has been a member of the Board since her election in June 2007 at the General Assembly in Athens. Attending the Mercado Workshop in Berlin on 17-19th February 2011, she tells us more about this event she helped to set up in 2009, when it took place for the first time in Montreux.

Philippe Vignon is a Genevan fluent in French, German, English and Italian who started his professional career with l’Oréal Suisse before moving to EasyJet Geneva, where he stayed for 11 years as Marketing Executive. Born on 29th January 1944 he began a degree in Economics in 1963. One year later he left his studies to travel the world, and didn’t return to Zagreb until 1970. For most of those 6 years, he worked as a tour guide in England, Germany, Belgium and Greece and on his return, chose to build his professional career in tourism.

This year the ECM Summer School was hosted by the city of Opatija, Croatia, from 30th August to 3rd September 2008. Sixty-seven students from twenty-one European countries attended the ECM Summer School, this time organised in the agreeable surroundings of Croatian seaside city, Opatija.
