[SCENARIO WORKSHOP] Trend Room / Climate Change & the Future of Tourism

April 2 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm CEST

FREE

The CityDNA Trend Room Knowledge Group is organising an Online Scenario Workshop on “Climate change & the Future of tourism” for CityDNA members on April 2 from 09:00 to 12:00 CET.

This unique online workshop will be prepared and moderated by Stefan Hartman, and Carolin Giarra, Scenario planners at ETFI (European Tourism Futures Institute).

We are thrilled to offer our members this unique Scenario Workshop for free!

⏳Capacity is very limited (25 pax), so please register by March 27!⏳
2 people maximum per destination

AIM
The aims of the scenario planning workshop are:
1. To explore how the impacts of climate change will transform the travel landscape of urban tourism destinations in the long term of 5 to 10 years by means of future scenarios (2035 is taken as time horizon);
2. To map possible implications of these scenarios;
3. To identify possible strategies to anticipate these future scenarios.
The first results will be presented in Budapest during the CityDNA International Conference on April 10. The outcome and conclusions of the workshop will result in a whitepaper that will be presented during our Autumn Conference in Tórshavn at the beginning of October 2025.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This workshop is targeted to DMOs strategists, (digital) markeeters, CEOs, salespeople, sustainability officers or anyone who is involved in developing future strategies for their organisation and destination.

PREPARATION
Please note that material and background information will be distributed to participants after registration, and some homework should be prepared by participants and sent back to Carolin Giarra by March 27.

WORKSHOP HOSTS AND MODERATORS
Carolin Giarra and Stefan Hartman, ETFI

WORKSHOP PROGRAMME
⏲️09:00-09:30 Introduction and Welcome. Presentation by Carolin and Stefan, starting with a recap of scenario planning followed by the outcomes of the preliminary analysis of questions submitted prior to the workshop, explanation of the scenario planning method.
⏲️09:30-10:30 Key uncertainties. By means of a voting session using Mentimeter and Microsoft Whiteboard, each participant will be asked to choose two driving forces (and underlying processes) that they consider having the biggest impact on the future of urban destinations and two that are the most uncertain or unpredictable. The two drivers that are both the most impactful and most uncertain are chosen as key uncertainties. Both key uncertainties represent an axis in the so-called scenario cross.
⏲️10:30-10:50 Limits of the possible. By means of Mentimeter the group of participants will collaboratively choose two plausible extremes that delimit the bandwidth of uncertainty of both axes. The extremes indicate what could possibly happen if the process (fuelled by the driving force) moves in one or another direction.
⏲️10:50-11:00 Coffee break. Carolin and Stefan will identify the three key features of each scenario.
⏲️11:00-11:50 Implications of scenarios. While imagining they have arrived in 2035 and visualising that a scenario has come true, the participants identify desirable and undesirable implications of the three key features on Microsoft Whiteboard. The participants will be split up into subgroups and rotate along the scenarios (20 min per scenario/round).
⏲️11:50-12:00 Summary of the workshop, outlook to next steps and closing by ETFI.

This Scenario Workshop is for CityDNA Members only. Registration link can be found on the CityDNA Intranet.
